Palestinian Footballer Mohammed Barakat Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Mohammed Barakat, a Palestinian football player, was killed on Monday after an Israeli aircraft struck his house in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza.

On the first day of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, several kinds of Israeli bombs were dropped on the home of his family.

Known as "the legend of Khan Younis," Barakat was the legendary captain of the Khan Younis Youth Club in addition to being a player for the Ahly Gaza football club and the Palestinian national team.

Football player Khalid Abu-Habel from Palestine called Barakat's death a "huge loss for Palestinian football" in an interview with Al Jazeera.

An exceptional goal scorer. He was a pleasant and courteous man off the field.

After 114 goals in his career, Barakat was one of Gaza's greatest scorers and the first player in the region to reach 100 goals for a single team.

The 39-year-old was the most recent in a line of athletes and administrators to die as a result of Israel's offensive in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
